На перекрестке улиц Святого Николая и Покровской до наших дней сохранилось старинное здание. Сегодня здесь находится роддом №1, но большинство запорожцев вряд ли догадывается, что этому зданию уже более сотни лет. И уж точно единицы помнят о человеке, благодаря которому это здание вообще появилось в нашем городе. Сегодня мы постараемся восполнить этот пробел.
Долгое время в Александровске не имелось полноценного родильного дома. Роды у жителей принимали повитухи. Повитухи не обладали какими-либо специальными медицинскими знаниями, основываясь на предыдущем опыте. Очень часто этот опыт передавался повитухами по наследству одной из своих дочерей.
Повитухи принимали роды на дому у рожениц. В случае возникновения каких-либо проблем оказать быструю помощь они были не в состоянии. По сути, главной задачей повитухи было «не мешать женщине родить». Разумеется, при таком подходе к делу любые нештатные ситуации при родах приводили к гибели ребенка, а то и роженицы. Нередкими были и случаи родовых травм.
Но Александровск был небольшим уездным городом, а потому рассчитывать на масштабные перемены в медицинском плане не мог. Самостоятельно найти деньги на строительство полноценного родильного дома и найм врача городская управа не могла.
В 1906 году наконец произошли положительные изменения. На работу были приняты две акушерки, но этого было критически мало. Требовалось более кардинальное решение, и оно вскоре было найдено.
Генрих Бернгардович Бэр родился в немецкой колонии Цюрихсталь, расположенной в Крыму. Сегодня это село Золотое Поле. Отцом его был местный поселенец (потомок швейцарских эмигрантов, основавших колонию), а матерью – Якобина Девальд, происходившая из прибалтийских немцев.
В 1884 году Бэр после окончания гимназии в Симферополе отправляется в Харьков. Там он поступает на медицинский факультет местного института. Обучение Бэр успешно закончил в 1890 году, получив звание уездного доктора. Далее была стажировка в немецком Лейпциге. Свою карьеру врача Генрих Бернгардович начал в родном Крыму, принимая больных в своем доме. Первый этаж был переоборудован под больницу, а на втором проживала семья доктора.
Когда Бэр точно переехал в Александровск – неизвестно. Но произошло это в первом десятилетии XX века, до 1906 года. Здесь он начал строительство собственной больницы. Нужной суммы у врача не было, и он взял кредит в банке. Для этого ему пришлось снова навестить город своей университетской юности, и вопрос был успешно решен. Кстати, кредитное дело сохранилось в харьковском архиве, и спустя многие годы его сумел отыскать запорожский историк Валерий Стойчев.
Здание больницы начали строить в 1911 году. Оно хорошо сохранилось до наших дней, лишь практически полностью исчезла надпись «Родильный приют доктора Г.Б. Бэра». Кроме родильного отделения, в больнице имелись офтальмологическое и хирургическое отделения.

На заседании городской санитарной комиссии, проходившем в 1913 году в числе прочих выступил врач Илларион Татаринов. Он акцентировал внимание слушателей на том, что необходимо обеспечить население города квалифицированной акушерской помощью.
На том же заседании присутствовал и Генрих Бэр. Он и предложил организовать акушерский пункт при своей больнице. Так и сделали, часть расходов компенсировали за счет городского бюджета.
При лечебнице имелись пять «социальных» коек. На них размещали тех рожениц, которые не имели средств для оплаты услуг врачей. Это был уникальный опыт для нашего города, который дал возможность появиться на свет детям даже из малоимущих семей. Родильный дом был очень востребован, только в 2014 году здесь родилось 104 ребенка.
Родильный дом был популярен и среди состоятельных людей. В частности, жители меннонитской колонии Шенвизе часто пользовались его услугами. В родильном доме была даже именная посуда. Заказывали ее на Дмитровском фарфоровом заводе.
Сам Бэр работал тут врачом, как и его супруга, исполнявшая роль акушерки. Впрочем, вскоре жена Бэра Вильгельмина отошла от медицинского дела и стала заниматься исключительно семьей. А заняться было чем – у Бэров было шесть детей, из которых 5 были общими детьми Генриха и Вильгельмины.
Больница же продолжала функционировать вплоть до 1918 года. Период ее работы можно охарактеризовать как муниципально-частный. С одной стороны, это была частная лечебница Генриха Бэра, а с другой – городской совет частично финансировал ее деятельность и использовал на благо горожан.

В 1918 году Бэр продает свою клинику новым владельцам (удивительно, что в тот бурный и революционный год они нашлись) и уезжает в Крым. Возможно, там Генрих Бэр рассчитывал переждать период Гражданской войны. Но этому не суждено было сбыться, и в том же году Генрих Бернгардович умер от туберкулеза. Там же, в Симферополе, умерла и его жена. Вильгельмина Бэр похоронена на старом кладбище Симферополя, где похоронен Генрих Бэр неизвестно до сих пор.
Судьба детей сложилась тоже трагично. Все они прошли через горнило сталинских репрессий. Так, точно известно что через ГУЛАГ прошла старшая из сестер Алиса, она и умерла в заключении. Две младшие сестры – Елена и Виктория попали на спецпоселение в Казахстан только за то, что они имели немецкое происхождение. Судьба же трех братьев – Бориса, Евгения и Эдуарда, очевидно, сложилась немногим лучше. Борис покончил с собой в результате травли со стороны местных «активистов». Где и как закончили свои дни Евгений и Эдуард Бэры пока неизвестно, но скорее всего разгадка этой тайны лежит где-то в архивах госбезопасности.
Клиника же была после завершения Гражданской войны отобрана в пользу государства. Вплоть до 1970-х годов здесь принимали роды, более того всю клинику превратили в роддом №1, ликвидировав другие отделения. До недавнего времени в здании размещалось отделение патологии беременности, но в рамках медицинской реформы его закрыли.
Недавно наш город посетила Людмила Носова, внучка Генриха Бэра. При ее участии была открыта памятная табличка выдающемуся доктору. Также она привезла несколько интересных предметов, связанных с клиникой и семейством Бэров. Экспонаты переданы в коллекцию областного музея. Будем надеяться, что вскоре здание пройдет полноценную реставрацию и займет достойное место среди других архитектурных памятников города. Возможно, со временем в нем откроют музей медицины.
