За радянських часів ідеологічний вплив на населення був майже безмежним. Влада постійно намагалась його посилити та поширити всіма можливими засобами. Одним з таких засобів і було створення спеціалізованих закладів освіти.
У брежнєвську епоху політизованість життя простого громадянина почала різко збільшуватися, відповідно зростала і роль партійних органів у забезпеченні цього впливу. Люди, які застали ті часи, напевно пам’ятають положення про КПРС як керівну та спрямовуючу силу радянського суспільства. Цей вислів офіційно закріплено через нову редакцію Конституції 1977 року.
Зрозуміло, керувати та спрямовувати треба було на високому ідеологічному рівні. Відповідно, потрібно було мати можливість як готувати партійні кадри та політагітаторів у масовій кількості, так і проводити політзаняття з населенням, поширювати брошури та журнали, а також знайомити з «правильною» літературою. Для цього й потрібні були повноцінні будинки політосвіти. У кожному обласному центрі обов’язково зводилася така будівля.
В ній обов’язково була підбірка ідеологічно вивіреної літератури та преси. Згідно неї, «будівник комуністичного суспільства» міг отримати відповіді на більшість своїх запитань щодо реалій у яких він жив, а також найближчого майбутнього. Також тут була підбірка тез «західної антирадянської пропаганди» та їх спростування згідно лінії партії, яка, доречі, час від часу змінювалась.
Перший будинок політпросвіти знаходився у тому приміщенні, яке зараз займає Театр юного глядача. Тут кожен міг знайти книги, журнали, а також переглянути фільми, які сприяли поглибленню розуміння ідеології комунізму та перевихованню громадян з ідеологічної точки зору.
Будинок політпросвіти був не лише місцем, де розповсюджували ідеологію, але й став певним центром культурного та освітнього життя у радянському суспільстві. Заходи, лекції та дискусії що проводились тут, намагались залучити широкий загал. Таким чином, однією з найважливіших функцій було створення платформи для обговорення та усвідомлення основних принципів ідеології.
Поступово будівля перестала відповідати своїм високим вимогам. Почали зводити новий будинок. Розташували його поряд з новою будівлею обкому партії, поблизу площі Фестивальної. Але покористуватись ним радянські пропагандисти змогли недовго. Будівлю здали в експлуатацію 1988-го, і вже у той час було дуже відчутно вітер змін.
Фактично, за призначенням нова будівля працювала приблизно два роки, може трохи більше. На той момент охочих збагачуватись комуністичною пропагандою було вже не так і багато. Зазвичай сюди направляли в порядку робочої та партійної, або комсомольскої дисципліни.
Після розпаду СРСР та зміни політичного курсу, ці будинки втратили свою первісну сутність та значущість. Ідеологія радянського комунізму втратила свою впливовість, а разом з нею зникла потреба у центрах політпросвіти. Більше того, у серпні 1991 року діяльність комуністичної партії була заборонена. Уся її власність була націоналізована і передавалась новим власникам.
По всій Україні йшло перетворення колишніх будинків політпросвіти у різноманітні культурні центри, бібліотеки чи інші заклади, які спрямовані на збереження культурної спадщини та надання доступу до різноманітних знань для кожного, незалежно від ідеологічних переконань.
Такий самий процес почався і у Запоріжжі. Старий будинок політпросвіти передали Театру юного глядача. Втім, артисти не були надто в захваті від «подарунку». До того ж, існувала версія, згідно якої і «новий» будинок політпросвіти теж повинні були передати театру, але без п’ятого поверху, який зайняв якийсь бізнес-клуб.
Артисти театру проводили демонстрації та мітинги, навіть залучали до них депутата тоді ще Верховної Ради СРСР, але все марно. Зрештою, «нову» будівлю зайняв суд і кінотеатр «Байда». А театр отримав лише стару будівлю. Вона зрештою була визнана аварійною, і театр перевели в інше місце. Зараз там знаходиться центр молоді та студентів.
Звісно, всередині провели серйозну реконструкцію. Колись тут була спеціальна сцена для виступів, тепер її вже немає. Ніщо не нагадує і про колишню бібліотеку з тисячами примірників журналів і пропагандистських книг. Все це пішло у минуле, разом із класиками марксизму-ленінізму. Доречі, колись на площі Фестивальній стояли і пропагандистські комуністичні стенди. Їх теж прибрали, причому ще у 1991 році.
