Эта история началась еще в 2019 году, но это только на первый взгляд. На самом деле ее корни уходят в далекие 1930-е годы, и чтобы распутать этот клубок противоречий и недоразумений, понадобится немало времени. Давайте попробуем это сделать вместе, а помогут нам в этом усилия сотрудников национального заповедника «Хортица».
В 2019 году в Запорожье становится известным широкой общественности громкий факт. В подвале одного из амбаров по улице Зачиняева удалось обнаружить неожиданное основание. Оно было частично выполнено из… надгробных плит с бывшего меннонитского кладбища.
Кладбище существовало начиная с первых лет существования колонии. Тут хоронили местных жителей, как приезжих колонистов, так и их детей. Смертность среди меннонитов из-за закрытого характера их общества была высокой, поэтому кладбище пополнялось стабильно. Просуществовало оно вплоть до революции и захвата власти большевиками. Те не слишком жаловали колонистов и их наследие, многие меннониты были арестованы и расстреляны еще в 1930-х годах.
Позднее, в годы войны и немецкой оккупации меннониты пользовались привилегированным положением. Разумеется, что в силу данного обстоятельства остаться и ждать прихода советских войск было бы не самой лучшей идеей. Поэтому большинство из потомков колонистов ушли вместе с немецкой армией на запад. Те же, кто остался, опять прошли через горнило спецпроверок и репрессий, многие были высланы в отдаленные районы СССР.

Память же о роли колонистов в жизни края, их деятельности на запорожской земле следовало уничтожить. В рамках этого ликвидировались старинные монументы, памятники. Старинные кладбища тоже никто не щадил. Коммунисты часто разрушали старинные кладбища во многих городах. Запорожье не стало исключением.
Могильные плиты же служили не только напоминанием о ненавистных колонистах-капиталистах, но и могли послужить стройматериалом. Так тогда тоже часто делали в разных городах. В нашем же случае плиты положили в качестве фундамента под старинный амбар. После подобных действий их инициаторам казалось, что память о колонистах похоронена навсегда.
Человеческая память все же оказалась крепче, чем советская власть. Коммунистическая идеология борьбы с прошлым тоже ушла в небытие, и сегодня снова становится нормальным явлением разбираться с нашей собственной историей.
Было известно, что часть плит была использована как фундамент одного из зданий. Сотрудники заповедника «Хортица» вели напряженную работу в течении многих лет. В конечном счете, им удалось идентифицировать тот самый амбар и получить разрешение на земляные работы.
Всего в ходе работ были найдены около 300 фрагментов бывших надгробий. Среди них можно увидеть хорошо знакомые фамилии: Дик, Тиссен, Паульс, Кооп. Члены этих уважаемых родов были владельцами крупных предприятий, известных далеко за пределами Александровска, равно как и меннонитских колоний. Продукция местных предприятий работала по всей империи.

Работы проходили долго, поскольку необходимых средств не хватало, не было и рабочих рук. Многое делалось на энтузиазме или с помощью местных волонтеров. Приходилось сначала убирать большой слой земли и мусора, и только потом взору исследователей открывались надгробия, точнее, их части.
Но в конце концов проект был успешно завершен. Монументы были очищены и установлены в качестве лапидария. Кстати, в ходе исследований надгробий запорожские историки установили немало подробностей жизни многих поколений колонистов, но об этом стоит рассказать отдельно. Тема эта еще до конца не исследована и требует как множества сил, так и времени.

Лапидарий разместили довольно далеко от изначального месторасположения кладбища. Оно находилось недалеко от амбара, на Верхней Хортице. Лапидарий же оборудовали на острове Хортица, недалеко от поворота на ЦИМЭЖ. Точные координаты – 47.8297977932789, 35.07988688348161.
Первоначально предполагалось разместить в лапидарии 15 монументов, но позже их число расширили до 18. С остальными монументами пока продолжают работать, ожидается, что со временем восстановленных надгробий станет больше. Открыли мемориал в июне 2021 года.
На открытии монумента присутствовали представители общины меннонитов в Запорожье. К ходу работ проявляли пристальное внимание и потомки тех, кто в свое время вынужден был покинуть запорожский край. В Канаде до сих пор существует мощная меннонитская община, в которой живет память о запорожских колониях. Частично работы были профинансированы именно этими людьми. Недаром на церемонии открытия присутствовали два флага – Украины и Канады.
В ходе работ была также выпущена и специальная книга. В ней собраны сведения о меннонитах, живших на запорожской земле, а также о захоронениях. Канадские же потомки бывших колонистов проявляют большое внимание к запорожским «находкам». За океаном называют данный комплекс «потерянным кладбищем Хортицы». Работы по поиску варварски разрушенного меннонитского наследия Запорожья, а также судьбы потомков колонистов будут продолжаться.
