Супермаркети в Запоріжжі з’явились ще наприкінці 1980-х, варто згадати хоча б той самий Універсам на Бабурці. Але мови про якісь масові мережі довго не йшло. Навіть більшу половину 1990-х років в Запоріжжі не існувало якоїсь великої мережі супермаркетів, тим більше місцевої.
Історія ця почалася у 1999 році. Саме тоді місто Запоріжжя вперше у свої історії побачило відкриття мережі супермаркетів під назвою «Кит». Цей магазин став першим у ряду, оскільки всі попередні заклади торгівлі харчовими та побутовими товарами, такі як «Євромарт» та інші, існували як окремі, в певному роді ізольовані магазини, хай і великі.
Відкриття мережі «Кит» викликало значний резонанс серед місцевого населення. Мешканці міста з нетерпінням чекали відкриття супермаркету, оскільки це була перша спроба створити ланцюжок магазинів зі стійкою репутацією та однаковим стандартом обслуговування.
Сам магазин «Кит» вражав своїми розмірами та асортиментом товарів. Завдяки широкому вибору продуктів харчування, предметів побуту та товарів для дому, він швидко завоював популярність серед місцевих мешканців. Поява такого магазину стала справжнім кроком у розвитку ритейлу в місті, відкривши нові можливості для споживачів та створивши зручне середовище для їхніх покупок.
Цікавим було і оформлення магазинів. До нього залучали місцевих художників, які підбирали відповідну кольорову гамму і відповідні мотиви. Саме це робило мережу унікальною у своєму роді.
Перший магазин працював на «нульовому» поверсі торгівельного центру «Україна». До цього там супермаркету ніколи не було. Поява «Кита» додала популярності торгівельному центру, який на той час був не надто відвідуваним.
Саме завдяки успішному запуску мережі «Кит» у Запоріжжі почало формуватися поняття комфортного та доступного шопінгу, де кожен міг знайти все необхідне в одному місці за прийнятними цінами. Це відкриття не лише змінило підхід до ритейлу в місті, а й визначило новий стандарт споживчої культури.
Реакція мешканців на появу мережі «Кит» була вражаючою. Люди отримали можливість купувати якісні товари за доступними цінами, не втрачаючи час на пошуки по різних магазинах міста. Це відкриття не лише задовольнило потреби споживачів, а й відобразило потребу у сучасних форматах торгівлі, які відповідали вимогам населення міста.
Згодом мережа почала масштабуватись. На момент продажу у мережі нараховувалось 17 магазинів у обласному центрі і ще один у Бердянську. Одночасно з тим готувались до відкриття ще декілька магазинів.
За асортиментом все було доволі схоже на будь-який типовий супермаркет. Були і самостійно розфасовані супермаркетом товари, тобто якийсь аналог добре знайомим нашим сучасникам «фірмових» для кожної мережі торгівельних марок.
Доволі часто проводились різноманітні акції, існували дисконтні програми. Також проводились розіграші. Так, наприклад, існувала акція «Щасливий покупець». Спочатку клієнт мав купувати товари з спеціальними наклейками, а потім прийняти участь у розіграші цінних призів.
При магазині «Кит-Фаворит», який знаходився у ТЦ «Україна», працював ще і невеличкий фаст-фуд, який мав назву «Мон-блан». Звісно, до рівня Макдональдса йому було далеко, це була по суті велика їдальня, але гарно оформлена. Вона нічим не нагадувала свої радянські «аналоги».
Також мережа регулярно приймала участь у різноманітних урочистостях та гуманітарних програмах. «Кит» був в певній мірі монополістом на запорізькому ринку, але перейти на більш серйозний рівень, тобто на загальноукраїнський, можливостей не було.
Торгова мережа Сільпо входить до складу Fozzy Group, яку у 1997 році заснували Володимир Костельман, Роман Чигір, Олег Сотников та Юрій Гнатенко. За словами Володимира Костельмана, бізнесом колишні однокласники взялися ще на початку 90-х, торгуючи продуктами харчування у Дніпропетровську (нині Дніпро). Згодом зосередилися на оптовій торгівлі чаєм, а взимку 1997 року переїхали до Києва.
Роком заснування мережі Сільпо вважається 1998-й. Тоді бізнесмени відкрили перший супермаркет у Києві. 2001 року Сільпо розрослася до п’яти магазинів. Мережа розширювалася переважно шляхом купівлі та оренди торгових площ, та розпочала поглинання інших мереж.
Більшість угод компанія провела у «золотий» для української економіки час – у період з 2004 по 2008 рік. 2007 року відбулися відразу дві великі покупки. У вересні 2007 року Fozzy Group і компанія БМ-Трейд (її кінцевий бенефіціар — литовський рітейлер Sanitex) уклали договір, внаслідок чого понад 40 магазинів, що працювали під брендом Бумі-Маркет, стали до кінця 2008 року частиною торгової мережі Фора. Загальна площа магазинів мережі – 24 000 кв. м у Києві, Київській, Чернігівській, Сумській та Житомирській областях.
