Колишній мер Бердянська Валерій Баранов був відомийсвоїми неординарними кроками щодо поліпшення благоустрію міста і не тільки. Зокрема, одного разу мерія звернулась до самого Біла Гейтса, власника компанії Microsoft.
Свого часу Валерій Баранов був типовою радянською людиною – отримав вищу освіту у Маріуполі (тоді місто називалось Жданов), працював за фахом. Паралельно Баранов просувався і партійною лінією – спочатку як комсомольський активіст, а згодом – діяч Компартії. Згодом зайнявся бізнесом у Бердянську.
Наприкінці 90-х Баранов вирішив повернутися у політику – 1998-го його обрали мером Бердянська. На цій посаді він відбув два терміни – до 2007 року. Однією з характерних рис його перебування на посаді було встановленнячудернацьких пам’ятників. Це робилося з метою покращення туристичного іміджу міста, його привабливості для гостей.
Так у перлині Приазов’я і з’явилися сантехнік Потапов у бронзі, бичок-годувальник, дачники з колорадським жуком, крісло бажань, діти лейтенанта Шмідта. Згодом їх доповнила величезна Жаба вісом у чверть тони з написом «Заздрість — порок».
Задум багато в чому вдався. До Бердянська і справді стало приїжджати все більше туристів. Мало у якого мешканця області немає фотографії з одним (або навіть з усіма) цими цікавими монументами.
У 2007 році Баранов придумав нову ідею. Вона мала у разі свого успіху суттєво поліпшити становище в міських школах, а навіть у разі повної невдачі додати місту і його меру трохи відомості і популярності.
Мер та секретар міскради підписали листа, який направили Біллу Гейтсу. У листі йшлося про те, що у Бердянську зараз дуже скрутне становище з освітою внаслідок того, що не вистачає ком’ютерів, на яких могли б навчатись школярі. Тому автори звернення просили Гейтса допомогти з оснащенням комп’ютерами шкіл Бердянська (вказана була навіть кількість, 250 одиниць) та необхідним програмним забезпеченням. Також американцю пропонувалось відкрити у Бердянську школу для обдарованих дітей.
У якості вдячності мерія пропонувала встановити операційній системі Windows пам’ятник у Бердянську. Також пропонувалось перейменувати на честь Білла Гейтса одну з міських вулиць. Все це відбувалось на фон перемовин тодішнього президента Віктора Ющенка з представником Microsoft. Тобто не можна сказати, що це був лише порожній хайп. Хай невелика, але імовірність співпраці все ж була.
Але, нажаль, дива так і не сталося. Жодної відповіді отримано не було, тому невідомо, чи отримував Білл Гейтс взагалі цього листа. Що цікаво, його відправляли звичайною поштою, хоча спочатку думали відправити електронного листа. Хто зна, може по «електронці» насправді було б і надійніше?
Таким чином, оснащувати комп’ютерами класи Бердянська довелось самотужки. Врешті-решт, ця проблема поступово виправлялася. На 2021 рік було проведено реконструкції ряду шкіл, і можна сказати що часи, коли у школах на уроках інформатики вивчали лише «Бейсік» чи «Турбопаскаль» пішли в давнину. Але тут прийшли російські агресори, і окупували місто.
З деяких шкіл комп’ютери винесли в невідомому напрямку, і колишні комп’ютерні класи стоять порожні. В деяких щось лишилось, але немає вчителів, та і дітей не так вже і багато. Цікаві пам’ятники вже нікому не потрібні, немає в місті і туристів.
Зрештою, пам’ятник операційній системі, як і вулиця імені Білла Гейтса у місті так і не з’явились. Навіть під час декомунізації і перейменування ряда вулиць про цю ідею ніхто вже не згадував. Повторних звернень у США теж вже не надсилали, змирилися.
Сам Баранов після того був мером ще раз, у 2020 році. Але невдовзі склав свої повноваження. За час свого останнього мерства колись один з найпопулярніших градоначальників запам’ятався хіба своєю відповіддю на скарги туристів. Тоді була велика проблема з медузами, якими було наповнене море на усіх пляжах. Баранов сказав що нічого катастрофічного немає і так вже колись було, тому нічого робити не треба.
Невдовзі він відійшов від своїх повноважень, як кажуть, внаслідок політичних суперечок та інтриг. Колишній мер помер у 2023 році. Доречі, була в його біографії ще і сторінка губернаторства. У 2014 році тодішній виконувач обов’язків президента Турчинов призначив саме Баранова губернатором Запорізької області. На диво, колишній комуніст проводив цілком державницьку політику і не допустив перетворення області на осередок «руського міра».
