В останні дні лютого 2022 року країна стояла на межі краху. Ще нічого не було ясно, а сили агресора просувались вглиб країни і захоплювали нові села і міста. У Запорізькій області ворог просувався особливо швидко, але завдяки справжньому героїзму нечисленних захисників області його все ж вдалося зупинити і не пустити до обласного центру.
Так вже склалося, що обороняти нашу область на початку війни майже не було кому. Батальон морської піхоти з Бердянську майже в повному складі був направлений до Маріуполя, невеличкий гарнізон у складі батальона Нацгвардії з Мелітополя також відвели, як і підрозділи, що мали охороняти міський аеродром.
Чи не головною дієвою силою став 9-й батальон 59-ї бригади. Це була єдина бригада Збройних сил України, що зустріла ворога на півдні. Більша її частина воювала на херсонському напрямку. Цей батальон був поставлений на Мелітопольский напрямок командувачем Соколовим, щоб хоч-якось прикрити Запорізьку область.
Вже під вечір 24 лютого під командування Соколова передали частини Нацгвардії, дислоковані в Запоріжжі. Вони теж не були укомплектовані по повному штату, частина військовослужбовців взагалі знаходилась в Маріуполі.
Під час переміщення і 9-й батальон, і бійці 137-го окремеого батальону морської піхоти не раз потраплятимуть в оточення. Зрештою, їх поступово виведуть на Василівку, а потім – до Кам’янського. До боїв за Мелітополь ці частини були не готові, оскільки понесли значні втрати. Втім, вони змогли нанести росіянам значних втрат – було знищено десятки одиниць техніки. Ворог вочевидь не очікував такого спротиву, тому і забаривсязі вступом до міста Мелітополь, вирішивши зробити це лише на ранку 25 лютого.
У бій відправили два неповних батальони Нацгвардії за підтримки танків. Вони змогли просунутись у місто і почати зустрічний бій з росіянами.
Тероборона у місті існувала, але не була сформована як підрозділ, навіть не встигли видати зброю всім вже оформленим. Зрештою, коли зібралась більш-менш достатня кількість добровольців, близько сотні людей — вони пішли самі шукати зброю. Щось знайшли у військоматі, ще дещо на вже покинутому аеродромі. Усіх тероборонівців вивели з міста ще в ніч на 25 число за наказом, участі у подіях 25 лютого в самому місті вони не прийняли.
Бій закінчився для українських підрозділів невдало. Нацгвардійців було надто мало,щоб вибити переважаючісили окупантів з Мелітополя. Тому ближче до вечора усі підрозділи Сил Оборони залишили місто і подались на північ.
Наступні бої йшли в районі між Молочанськом та Василівкою. Там було знищено невелику російську колону,що складалася з вантажівок з боєкомплектом та заправників. Саме тут іотримали своє бойове хрещення мелітопольскі тероборонівці.
Також великим успіхом було знищення великого угрупування противника з «Ураганів». Артилеристи відпрацювали вкрай вдало, ворог поніс великі втрати і призупинився.
Звісно, малими силами втримати рубежі оборони було вкрай важко. Нечисленні сили тероборони та добровольці намагались чинити опір, але сил ворога було занадто багато. Окрім того, нажаль, знайшлись і зрадники та колаборанти, що показували окупантам безпечний або обхідний шлях. Свою справу робила і ворожа авіація.
Внаслідок цього довелось скорочувати фронт і відходити на північ. Останнє оточення було в районі Василівки, де українські підрозділи ледве змогли вирватись. Так само відходили українські підрозділи і з Токмака та Полог. Ледве озброєні протягом 25 лютого, тероборонівці не могли сподіватись втримати ворога.
Тим часом на запорізький фронт прибули підрозділи 128 бригади. Разом з тими, хто вже перебував на даній ділянці, вони сформували більш-менш сталу оборону, яка і зупинила російський наступ. Таким чином, виграний 25 лютого час був безцінним. За цейчас командування змогло перекинути хоч-якісь сили до Запоріжжя, які потім і зупинять агресорів.
