Набережная магистраль играет важнейшую роль для запорожцев. Это и часть объездной дороги (которой на самом деле в Запорожье нет), и самая скоростная дорога из всех запорожских, и наиболее быстрый и удобный способ попасть к Днепру поближе.
Набережную магистраль начали строить в 1970-х годах прошлого века. Тогда были широкие планы на обустройство правого берега Днепра. там предполагалось построить настоящий город-спутник Запорожья. Теперь там располагается Хортицкий район Запорожья, который хоть и существенно меньше когда-то запланированного здесь жилого массива, но все же является масштабной частью города.
Поскольку возле Запорожья не имелось кольцевой объездной дороги, вопрос проезда через город большегрузного и транзитного транспорта нужно было решить другим способом. Одним из них было строительство скоростной автомагистрали, которая бы проходила в стороне от городской застройки. Это позволило бы увеличить на ней скорость, уменьшить количество светофоров и т.д.
В ходе работ произошли некоторые изменения на местности. Так, навсегда исчезли несколько лодочных станций, так как по их территории прошла автодорога. Но былые масштабные планы касательно обустройства набережной и зоны отдыха так и остались только на бумаге и в проектах. Довершить начатое помешал как экономический кризис конца 1980-х, так и последующие события. В итоге из всех планов сохранилась только автодорога.
В 1990-х годах было не до улучшений и переделок, в городе даже не работало освещение. Задумались о преобразованиях Набережной только в «нулевых». Облагородить прибрежную зону казалось хорошей идеей, поскольку ничего похожего на набережную в том же Днепре не было.
Институт «Запорожгражданпроект» разработал проект реконструкции. Согласно ему, на Набережной должно было появится довольно много новых объектов. Так, предполагалось построить полноценный торговый центр с подземным размещением. Набережная должна была стать городской дорогой с выездами в отдельные части города.
Так, основные транспортные развязки предполагалось разместить в районе Песков, Красной речки и Дубовой рощи. Должны были построить и ряд эстакад. Кроме того, к Набережной должен был примыкать масштабный жилой комплекс, построенный в районе площади Пушкина. Но главным образом проект предусматривал обустройство развлекательных зон, пешеходных переходов и собственно транспортного маршрута через весь город.
Еще одной особенностью проекта было строительство канатной дороги от бывшего Дворца пионеров до Музея казачества на Хортице. Но, как мы видим, все это так и осталось только лишь на бумаге. Денег на полноценное проведение работ власти так и не нашли.
В 2017-м году начались работы по преобразованию небольшого кусочка Набережной в районе Центрального пляжа. Там вымостили новый тротуар, наладили освещение, установили скамейки и урны.
Также в рамках реконструкции провели ремонт самой автодороги и облагородили Центральный пляж. Там появились фонтанчики для мытья ног, отремонтированные раздевалки, а также новый песок. Кроме того, на пляже появилось и намного больше парковочных мест в виде карманов. Были высажены и дополнительные зеленые насаждения.
Следующим крупным изменением вблизи Набережной стало строительство напротив пляжа супермаркета АТБ. Его расположение обеспечило магазину постоянный поток клиентов, но о их безопасности почему-то никто не подумал. Нерегулируемый пешеходный переход в итоге превратился в смертельно опасное место. Это прямой участок дороги, на котором водители традиционно набирают скорость. И хотя там действует ограничение скорости до 40 км/ч, это мало спасает. Скоростной режим практически никто не соблюдает, и случаи ДТП с пешеходами происходят довольно часто. К тому же, обзор в данном месте ограничен из-за прилегающей к самому переходу парковки.

На этом все переделки и закончились. Еще в рамках реконструкции частично заменили освещение вдоль дороги, но существенно оно не улучшилось. Фонари преимущественно освещают сами себя.
Совсем недавно заместитель мэра Александр Власюк представил новый проект реконструкции Набережной. Если он будет реализован, то вся территория, подлежащая реконструкции, будет поделена на отдельные зоны.
Должно появиться немало качественно новых объектов. Так, тут будет скейт-парк, экстрим-парк, зона для выгула животных. Также будет и полноценная детская развлекательная зона.
Пока что не называют никаких конкретных сроков реконструкции, а также стоимости работ. В ходе реконструкции должны переработать и существующие пешеходный мост над Набережной. Его предполагается сделать одним из самых ярких объектов данной зоны. Тем не менее, реализация проекта (вернее, ее вероятность) вызывает немало вопросов у горожан.

Пока что наиболее вероятной можно считать установку светофора возле АТБ. На данный момент готовится технико-экономическое обоснование данных работ. Очевидно, висящая чуть дальше по ходу движения камера, автоматически выписывающая штрафы не слишком-то пугает нарушителей. Возможно, светофор со временем сможет решить проблему безопасности.
На данный момент состояние Набережной магистрали оставляет желать лучшего. Не очень качественное дорожное покрытие, местами уже хорошенько подпорченное грузовиками, плохое освещение, большое число аварийно-опасных участков – все это говорит о том, что до дороги европейского уровня нашей магистрали еще далеко.
