Сама назва селища Степногірськ, що в Запорізькій області, зберігає в собі суперечність, поєднуючи ніби несумісні поняття «степ» та «гори». Ось і історія цього населеного пункту, його швидкий зліт та таке ж швидке падіння є проекцією еклектики, зашифрованої в імені.
До початку російського повномасштабного вторгнення це було селище міського типу з населенням приблизно у 4 тисячі людей, що стирчить двома висотними кварталами посеред степу неподалік сімферопольскої траси приблизно у 30 кілометрах від Запоріжжя. Але, згідно з радянським планом, до нашого часу Степногірськ мав стати великим промисловим містом, розрахованим на 75 тисяч жителів.
І якийсь час усе до цього справді йшло. На початку 80-х геологи знайшли неподалік скромного села Сухоіванівка у Василівському районі Запорізької області величезне родовище марганцевої руди, одне з найбільших у Європі. Тут же почалася розробка – за пару років було збудовано дві шахти, а поряд з ними швидко виросло і місто для працівників, назване Степногірськом. На початку 1990-х тут мешкало вже майже дев’ять тисяч людей, які з’їхалися за довгим рублем з усього Радянського Союзу.
Ось тільки незалежній Україні марганцева руда виявилася непотрібною – промисловість пішла у круте піке. Тим більше, що зовсім недалеко, з іншого боку Каховського водосховища, вже розроблялося інше її родовище з центром у місті Марганець. Воно й залишилося працювати, на відміну від ГЗК у Степногірську. В Інтернеті є інформація, що на початку 90-х шахти в Степногірську за копійки купила якась американська компанія, яка одразу їх і законсервувала, побоюючись, що вони потраплять до рук того, хто справді може зайнятися їх експлуатацією. Адже марганцю в цьому родовищі було так багато, що його видобуток у промислових масштабах міг збити ціну на цей ресурс у всьому світі.
У подальшому млявий конфлікт за це родовище йшов між групами Приват та ІСД. Влітку 2012 року зацікавилася місцевим марганцем і китайська компанія Hubei Changyang Hongxin Industrial Group, Ltd. Вона обіцяла інвестувати у це місце близько мільярда доларів. Але це теж залишилось хіба на папері та в Інтернеті
До недавніх пір селище Степногірськ стояло нікому не потрібним посеред поля, осторонь жвавої траси, якою колись можна було добратись у Сімферополь. Робочих місць тут майже не було. Безробіття, згідно з різними даними, тут становило від 60 до 90 відсотків, що робить цей населений пункт одним із найдепресивніших в Україні.
У Степногірську немає ні опалення, ні газу. Холодна вода подається за розкладом – водогін був побудований у 1980-х як тимчасовий, а тому його нинішній стан не дозволяє експлуатувати комунікації на повну потужність. Шахти поряд із містом законсервовані, залізнична гілка, що веде до них, розібрана.
Втім, до початку повномасштабного конфлікту місто виглядало більш-менш охайно. Хоча ця локація однозначно сподобається любителям подивитися на «міста – привиди». Подібного роду туристів Степногорськ «здивує» працюючими школами, дитячими садками, та будинками, що досить акуратно виглядають.
Багатьох цікавили недобудовані багатоповерхові будинки, зокрема дев’ятиповерхові будівлі, звідки відкривався розкішний краєвид на водосховище, яке місцеві жителі називали Каховським морем. Всупереч думці, що у Степногорську багато зруйнованих будинків, необхідно зазначити, що в поганому стані знаходився хіба що колишній будинок культури. Безумовно, найбільший інтерес викликали руїни Таврійського гірського збагачувального комплексу з видобутку руди, до якого доїхати автомобілем, досить складно через поганий стан дорожнього покриття. Діставшись до них, можна було подивитися на розібрану (розкрадену) залізницю, недобудовану інфраструктуру та затоплені штольні. Дивлячись на зруйновані об’єкти, стає зрозумілим, що хтось цілеспрямовано їх знищував, ось тільки з якими цілями – не відомо. Неподалік можна почути роботу нелегальних «копанок».
Степногірськ зараз — це два квартали висоток, розташованих на відстані півтора кілометри один від одного. Між ними трохи приватного сектора — залишків села Степногірськ, що існувало тут до виявлення покладів марганцю.
Так вже сталось, що навала рашистів зупинилась приблизно у 5 кілометрах від міста. Сюди долітає все — від артилерійських снарядів то авіаційних бомб. Тому в місті було проведено примусову евакуацію дітей, і зараз жодної дитини немає. Залишились лише ті дорослі, що навідріз відмовилися покинути місто.
Обстріли відбуваються кожного дня. Тому підрозділи ДСНС постійно виїжджають сюди для тушіння пожеж, а також для допомоги постраждалим. Також росіяни постійно б’ють по лініях електромереж. Це особливо важко впливає на мешканців у холодну пору року, адже опаленняв місті немає, а в багатоповерхівках буржуйку чи піч не облаштуєш. Тому лишаються лише електрообігрівачі. Роботи електромонтерам теж вистачає, вони постійно лагодять підстанції та побиті лінії живлення.
Тим не менше, мешканці продовжують підтримувати життяв місті і всіляко заперечують, що воно «мертве». Депресивне — так, можливо. Але ворогів тут ніхто з хлібом-сіллю не чекає,як і на інших територіях області. Щодо майбутнього Степногірська – поки що важко загадувати наперед. Можливо, колись інвестиції все ж прийдуть сюди, і у міста буде другий шанс на розвиток.
