Поляк был мэром недолго, всего три года. Но успел сделать столько, что помнят его запорожцы до сих пор. Александр Поляк был очень нетипичным городским чиновником, поскольку вышел из милицейских рядов. Сегодня мы познакомим вас с биографией этого незаурядного для истории Запорожья человека.
Будущий мэр родился в Запорожье в 1948 году. Закончив школу №41 и гидротехнический техникум, Александр отправляется служить в армию. Служба проходила в Беларуси, в городе Лида. По возвращении из армии решает продолжить службу, но уже в милиции.
Первое место службы было не самым почетным – вытрезвитель №1, располагался он по адресу ул. Макаренко, 2. Общение с «алкашами» было отнюдь не самым героическим делом, зато придавало необходимую для милиционера закалку. Ведь зачастую милиционерам приходилось иметь дело с далеко не самыми приличными и интеллигентными людьми. В «трезвяке» Поляк прослужил меньше года, и уже в 1971 году становится командиром взвода в УВД Запорожского горисполкома.
Для дальнейшей карьеры нужно было получать образование. В 1971-1973 Поляк обучается мастерству следователя в Саратове в спецшколе милиции. Позднее, в 1973-1976 годах будет еще и заочное образование в Академии МВД СССР по специальности «правоведение».
Служба проходила нелегко, работы хватало. Но Поляк умел решать проблемы, и к октябрю 1985 года дослужился до начальника главного управления внутренних дел Запорожья. В этот период в городе происходили резонансные преступления (кража на «Коммунаре» и похождения маньяка Сергеева). С преступниками обычно удавалось быстро справиться, и наш город приобрел в преступной среде славу «ментовского». Так говорили потому, что сотрудники МВД наладили неплохую агентурную сеть, и о прибытии в город новых бандитов и аферистов становилось быстро известно. Их или арестовывали, или не давали заниматься преступной деятельностью, заставляя уезжать из города.

В 1990-х годах работать в милиции было сложно. Не хватало буквально всего – бронежилетов, бензина, даже зарплату выдавали не всегда вовремя. Но Поляк, возглавлявший криминальную милицию, пытался сделать что было возможно в тех непростых реалиях. Неизвестно, что именно подвигло генерала милиции выдвинуться на выборы городского головы. Знавшие Александра Владимировича люди говорят, что ему просто надоел беспорядок и воровство, царившие на тот момент в Запорожье.
Выборы 1998 года проходили в напряженной борьбе. Почти вся городская пресса поддерживала действующего мэра Головко, а Поляк считался «непроходным» кандидатом. Но чем ближе подходил день выборов, тем яснее становилось, что милиционер пользуется среди населения большим уважением.
Процесс выборов и подсчета голосов сопровождали многочисленные подтасовки и нарушения. Достаточно лишь вспомнить, что протоколы с нескольких участков привезли для подсчета с опозданием практически в сутки. Как бы там ни было. выборы выиграл Головко. Вскоре после выборов состоялась коллегия МВД, на которой Поляка фактически вынудили уйти в отставку за политическую активность. Казалось, что действующий мэр победил своего соперника.
Но Поляк не привык сдаваться. Обладая обширными связями в милиции и других контролирующих и силовых структурах, Александр Владимирович легко получил многочисленные доказательства коррупции, охватившей городскую власть. Все эти факты «сливались» в прессу. В итоге были назначены досрочные выборы, которые Поляк выиграл с большим отрывом.

В городе дел было невпроворот. Одним из первых распоряжений Поляка на посту городского головы было включение света на центральном проспекте. Далее центральную улицу города облагородили, произведя обреку (или удаление) старых деревьев. Они часто становились причиной аварий, их ветви в плохую погоду падали на дорогу и на электропровода.
Следом принялись за здания, размещенные вдоль проспекта. Произвели их фасадный ремонт, а также наладили подсветку ряда задний. Некоторые из них в ту пору принадлежали запорожским предприятиям, «вися» на их балансе. Условием принятия домов в коммунальную собственность Поляк ставил приведение домов в «божеский» вид, в частности наладив подсветку. Мэр часто ездил по городу в вечернее время, оценивая позитивные преображения. Так запорожцы узнали, что их город может быть не только серым и унылым, а и красивым.
Одним из важных дел была реконструкция проспекта и удаление с него трамвайной линии. Многие тогда критиковали это решение. Лишь с течением времени стало понятно, что оно было правильным. Транспортному потоку уже сейчас тесно на проспекте, и трамвай сегодня здесь представить сложно.
Важным делом для мэра было и строительство мостов. Он немало времени проводил в столичных кабинетах, выбивая необходимые средства и разрешения. Можно не сомневаться, если бы Поляк оставался мэром еще несколько лет – мосты были бы достроены. Поляк считал эту стройку одним из важнейших дел, наряду со стадионом.
Также за время работы Поляка на посту мэра произошли важные преобразования на Южном микрорайоне. Здесь навели порядок с рынком, самозахватом занявшим одну из полос дороги. Также был пущен троллейбус, а также построена дорога на Космос со стороны улицы Автозаводской, также преобразована и улица Чапаева.

Были, впрочем, у Поляка и не самые удачные идеи. Именно при нем появился знаменитый «памятник туалетам», а также развернулись маршрутные перевозки. Впрочем, на тот момент большинство городских АТП уже по сути дышали на ладан, и маршрутки просто заполнили образовавшийся вакуум. Кстати, вот цитата Поляка, которая актуальна и сегодня:
А в то же время говорят: нам такие убытки приносят льготники! Дайте дотации на льготников! Дайте! Завтра остановимся! Еще не поняли: не только не дам – выгоню. Потому как жулики. Крупные АТП выкуплены, там есть отдельные капиталисты, понимаете. Но пройдет немного времени, и в городе будет порядок. Будут работать комфортабельные автобусы. Многие из тех, кто сегодня работает, уйдут, потому что я поставил задачу навести порядок и добьюсь ее выполнения. Те, кто выбрасывает пенсионеров, никогда в Запорожье работать не будут. Никогда!

22 февраля 2003 года Александр Поляк скоропостижно скончался, по официальным данным – от инфаркта. Для прощания к ДК «Днепроспецсталь» пришли десятки тысяч запорожцев. Их никто не приводил по разнарядке, люди пришли добровольно. Многие подозревали, что теперь от былой энергии, питавшей возрождение города не останется и следа. Увы, так оно и случилось…
Очень скорые похороны породили много кривотолков. Многие и по сей день подозревают, что генерала отравили. Врагов у Поляка, действительно, хватало. Это и окружение бывшего мэра, и местный бизнесмен Кальцев, и многие другие. По слухам, был у Поляка даже конфликт с тогдашним премьером Януковичем. Бывший милиционер якобы отказался пожимать Януковичу руку, сославшись на уголовное прошлое «профФессора». Тот, якобы, этого не забыл и отомстил.
Как оно было на самом деле – мы уже никогда не узнаем. Не будем горевать о том, что Александра Владимировича больше нет. Лучше порадуемся, что он у нас был…
